Dakota County Jail Overview

The Dakota County Jail is operated by the Dakota County Sheriff's Office Detention Services division. It sits in the county Law Enforcement Center in Hastings and functions as a direct-supervision adult jail. Direct supervision means correctional deputies work in or near housing units and manage daily activity more directly than in an older linear jail model. The jail holds adults who are booked after arrest, people waiting for a first court appearance, inmates serving county-level sentences, warrant arrestees, and probation or parole holds.

The adult jail should not be confused with the Dakota County Juvenile Services Center. The 2025 Minnesota Department of Corrections inspection found the jail had no approval to hold juveniles and reported no juvenile bookings between October 1, 2024 and the inspection date. Youth detention and treatment are handled through the separate juvenile facility operated by Community Corrections.

Dakota County Jail Capacity

Dakota County still publishes an older public overview that describes a 263-bed direct-supervision facility. The more current 2025 DOC inspection lists 270 approved secure coed beds as of April 4, 2025. It also gives a 95 percent operational capacity of 256.5 beds. The change matters because the jail added a 26-person Integrative Health Unit for people in mental health or chemical dependency crisis, and the inspection explains that the earlier listed capacity had a one-bed error before that unit was added.

The 2025 inspection approved operation from August 1, 2025 through July 31, 2027 and placed the jail on biennial status. It reported substantial compliance, including 99.22 percent for mandatory Minnesota Rule Chapter 2911 items and 99.10 percent for essential rules. One mandatory issue involved refrigerated medication temperature logs. An essential-rule volunteer agreement packet issue had already been corrected.

Dakota County Jail Roster Lookup

The main lookup channel is the Dakota County Jail Search. It is a county-run search page for current custody. It is not a statewide prison locator and it is not a private roster vendor. The page requires at least one search criterion and lets users search by last name, first name, from and to date posted, or court date. The roster warns that it should not be relied on for legal action, that identity is confirmed only by fingerprint comparison, and that some people may use false identifying information.

1. Open the Dakota County Jail Search page and enter at least one field. Last name is the most natural starting point.
2. Add first name, date posted, or court date when the name is common or the search returns too many records.
3. Review the current-custody results for charge, bail, court, and photo details when a profile is available.
4. If no record appears, check timing, release, transfer, state DOC custody, federal custody, immigration custody, or a records request path.

Dakota County Jail Visiting

Dakota County uses public on-site video visiting for the adult jail. Visits are daily in three blocks, and each visit can last up to 20 minutes. A called party may not be available because of court, programs, security needs, lockdown, or housing-unit limits. Visitors must follow age, ID, dress, and conduct rules. Attorneys have unrestricted physical access, although emergency and lockdown delays can still occur.

Those hours are the starting point for planning, but jail operations can change whether an inmate is available at a specific moment.

Dakota County Jail Mail and Money

Mail for an adult inmate is addressed to the inmate's name at Dakota County Law Enforcement Center, P.O. Box 247J, Hastings, MN 55033. Dakota County allows letters, photos, greeting cards, and money orders. It prohibits scented mail, lipstick marks, sexual or gang photos, musical or heavily decorated cards, stamps, envelopes, blank paper, printed books, newspapers, magazines, personal bills, cash, checks, business cards, and brochures. Money orders must be made out to the inmate.

Following those rules matters because prohibited items can delay or block delivery to the housing unit.

Deposits can be made by money order, through Inmate Canteen and TurnKey Corrections, or at the 24-hour lobby kiosk. Inmates may buy postage-paid envelopes, snacks, soft drinks, and basic necessities. Dakota County Jail Booking

After arrival, adults are searched, body scanned, booked, fingerprinted, and photographed. The fingerprint step is important because the public roster warns that true identity can only be confirmed through fingerprint comparison. If a person does not bail out, jail staff assign a housing unit and issue jail uniforms, bedding, and hygiene products. Court times shown on the roster are estimates, and District Court questions go to 651-377-7188.

Booking may start with a new arrest, a bench warrant, a complaint warrant, a probation or parole hold, or an out-of-county warrant. Dakota County's warrant guidance says adults can surrender to court during business hours or to local law enforcement agencies around the clock. Surrendering at the Law Enforcement Center places the person in custody and can take several hours because fingerprints, photographs, and identity checks occur before bail or bond can be posted.

Dakota County Jail Fees

Dakota County posts jail fee information separately from the roster. The fee page lists a booking fee, daily jail booking report fee, fingerprint fee, pay-for-stay fee, work release fee, and out-of-county boarding rates. Public records fees are handled under Dakota County data-practices rules. Inspection of public data is free, but paper copies can cost 25 cents per one-sided page or 50 cents per two-sided page for 100 or fewer black-and-white letter or legal pages. Other copy types may be charged at actual cost.

A missing roster result does not always mean no custody exists.
